negotiation
The process of talking to reach an agreement everyone accepts.
Negotiation is the process of talking through disagreements or different wants to reach an agreement that works for everyone involved. When you negotiate, you're trying to find a solution where both sides get at least some of what they need.
Imagine two friends who both want to play different games at recess. Through negotiation, they might agree to play one game today and the other tomorrow, or combine elements of both games into something new. That's negotiation: compromising and problem-solving together through discussion.
Negotiation happens constantly in everyday life. You might negotiate with your parents about bedtime or screen time. Countries negotiate treaties to avoid wars. Business owners negotiate contracts with their suppliers. Workers negotiate their salaries with employers. Even when you're working on a group project and everyone has different ideas, you're negotiating to find the best approach.
Good negotiation isn't about one person winning and another losing. It's about listening carefully, understanding what matters most to the other person, and finding creative solutions. Someone skilled at negotiation stays calm, asks good questions, and looks for ways both sides can benefit. The goal is an agreement that everyone can accept, even if no one gets everything they initially wanted.
