neighboring
Located very close to or next to something else.
Neighboring describes things that are next to each other or very close by. Your neighboring desk at school is the one right beside yours. A neighboring town is one that shares a border with your own or sits just a short distance away.
When you talk about neighboring countries, you mean nations that touch each other on a map, like the United States and Canada. Neighboring houses share a property line or fence. Neighboring classrooms might be right across the hall from each other.
Notice that neighboring doesn't always mean directly touching. A neighboring state might be one state over, close enough that people travel back and forth regularly. Scientists studying wildlife might talk about animals in neighboring habitats, meaning environments close enough that the animals interact with each other.
The word carries a sense of connection and relationship. Neighboring places often share things: similar weather, trading relationships, or cultural influences. When a forest fire threatens neighboring communities, those towns must work together because what affects one will likely affect the others, too.
