newcomer
A person who is new to a place or activity.
A newcomer is someone who has recently arrived in a place or recently started participating in an activity. When a new student joins your class in the middle of the school year, they're a newcomer. When a family moves to a different town, they're newcomers to that community until they've settled in and gotten to know people.
The word captures that in-between feeling of not yet being fully familiar with how things work. A newcomer to chess is still learning how the pieces move, while an experienced player knows dozens of strategies. A newcomer to a neighborhood might not know which route to take to school or where the best park is located.
Being a newcomer can feel uncomfortable because everyone else already knows the unwritten rules and inside jokes, but it's also temporary. Every expert was once a newcomer. Every old friend was once the new kid. The word reminds us that starting fresh in a new place or activity is a normal part of life.
