newsman
A man who reports and explains news to the public.
A newsman is a man who works in journalism, gathering and reporting news to the public. Newsmen might work as television anchors reading the evening news, newspaper reporters investigating stories, or radio journalists describing breaking events. The term was especially common in the mid-20th century, when most journalists were men and networks like CBS featured legendary newsmen like Walter Cronkite, who reported on everything from space launches to presidential elections.
Today, people more often use gender-neutral terms like journalist, reporter, or news anchor since both men and women work in news. But you'll still encounter “newsman” in older books and movies, or when referring to male journalists specifically. A newsman's job requires curiosity, persistence, and the ability to explain complex events clearly so the public understands what's happening in their community and the world.
Newsmen ask tough questions, verify facts, and help people understand both what happened and why it matters. They investigate and analyze information rather than simply repeating what they're told or what someone wants them to say.
