notation
A system of symbols used to write information clearly.
Notation is a system of symbols used to represent information in a clear, organized way. Musicians use musical notation to write down songs using notes on a staff, showing which pitches to play and for how long. Mathematicians use mathematical notation like the plus sign (+) or equals sign (=) to express calculations everyone can understand.
The power of notation is that it creates a common language. When a composer in Austria writes a piece using standard musical notation, an orchestra in Japan can read those same symbols and play the music as intended. When scientists use chemical notation like H₂O, researchers everywhere immediately understand they're talking about water.
Different fields have their own notation systems. Chess players use chess notation to record moves (like “Nf3”). Dancers use dance notation to write down choreography.
Good notation makes complex ideas simpler to share and remember. Before musical notation was standardized, songs could only spread by people hearing them and trying to remember them. Notation changed that completely, allowing musical ideas to travel across continents and centuries. When you write “3 × 4 = 12” instead of writing out “three times four equals twelve,” you're using the efficiency of mathematical notation.
