numismatics
The study and collecting of coins and paper money.
Numismatics is the study and collection of coins, paper money, medals, and tokens. A numismatist (say: new-MIZ-muh-tist) is someone who collects these items or studies their history, design, and meaning.
Coins tell fascinating stories about the past. Ancient Roman coins show emperors' faces and celebrate military victories. Colonial American coins reveal what life was like before the United States existed. Some coins commemorate special events, like the Olympics or a country's independence. By examining old coins, numismatists learn about economics, art, politics, and daily life from centuries ago.
Collectors might focus on coins from a particular country, time period, or theme. Some search for rare coins with minting errors (mistakes made during production), which can be extremely valuable. Others collect coins simply because they find the designs beautiful or historically interesting.
Museums often have numismatic collections that help visitors understand how people traded, what they valued, and how governments have worked throughout history.
