odds and ends
Small random leftover things that don’t fit anywhere else.
Odds and ends are small, miscellaneous items that don't quite fit into neat categories. When you clean out your desk drawer and find a few paper clips, a broken crayon, some rubber bands, and a marble you forgot about, those are odds and ends: the random little things that accumulate over time.
The phrase usually refers to leftover bits and pieces that aren't important enough to organize carefully but might still be useful. A carpenter might have odds and ends of wood scraps in the workshop. Your grandmother might keep a drawer of odds and ends in the kitchen: twist ties, spare buttons, a stubby pencil, and other small objects that don't have a proper home.
When someone says they need to “tie up a few odds and ends,” they mean finishing small remaining tasks. Maybe you've completed your big school project but still need to add a title page and staple it together: those final touches are the odds and ends.
The phrase captures something true about life: not everything fits neatly into place. Some things are just random remnants, and that's perfectly fine. Having a spot for odds and ends means you're prepared when you suddenly need that one odd thing you almost threw away.
