offside
A rule in sports where attackers move too far ahead unfairly.
Offside is a rule violation in sports like soccer and hockey that happens when an attacking player moves too far ahead of the ball or puck, gaining an unfair advantage by positioning themselves closer to the goal than the rules allow.
In soccer, a player is offside if they're closer to the opponent's goal line than both the ball and the second-to-last defender when their teammate passes the ball. Imagine a forward camping right in front of the goal, waiting for long passes: that would make scoring too easy, so the offside rule prevents it. The player must time their run carefully, staying level with or behind defenders until the exact moment the ball is kicked.
Hockey has a similar rule about crossing the blue line before the puck.
The offside rule keeps games fair and strategic. Without it, attackers could just hang around the goal waiting for easy scores. Instead, players must coordinate their movements, defenders can push up the field without worrying about someone lurking behind them, and the game stays dynamic. Getting called offside means the referee stops play and gives possession to the other team, so players work hard to perfect their timing and avoid this frustrating call.
