omnipotent
Having unlimited power, able to do absolutely anything.
Omnipotent means having unlimited power, able to do absolutely anything.
When people describe God as omnipotent, they mean God can do anything: create universes, perform miracles, or answer prayers. No task is too difficult, no problem too complex. An omnipotent being faces no limitations.
In stories, villains sometimes dream of becoming omnipotent, wanting the power to control everything and everyone. But these stories often show that even unlimited power has consequences. In Bruce Almighty, a man temporarily receives God's powers and discovers that having omnipotent abilities doesn't automatically make everything better or easier.
You might see omnipotent used more loosely to describe someone who seems extremely powerful in a particular situation. A principal might seem omnipotent to kindergarteners who think she controls everything in the school. But this is exaggeration: true omnipotence means actually having infinite power, not just appearing powerful to others.
The word reminds us that while humans can accomplish remarkable things through hard work and ingenuity, we all face limits. Scientists can't create matter from nothing. Engineers can't build machines that run forever without energy. Even the strongest person can't lift a mountain. Omnipotence belongs only to the realm of the divine or the imaginary.
