The word also means a beginning or start. The opening of a book sets up the story and introduces the characters. The opening ceremony of the Olympics celebrates the start of the games with pageantry and excitement. A chess player's opening moves establish their strategy for the rest of the game.

In another sense, an opening is an available position or opportunity. When a job opening appears at a company, it means they're looking for someone to fill that role. If you see an opening in a crowded hallway, you can slip through. In basketball, a player watches for an opening in the defense where they can make a shot.
