opt
To choose one thing instead of another.
To opt means to make a choice between different possibilities. When you opt for something, you decide to pick it over other options. If your teacher lets the class opt between writing an essay or giving a presentation, you choose whichever one suits you better.
The word often appears in everyday situations where someone has the freedom to choose. A student might opt to join the chess club instead of the drama club. A family might opt to drive to their vacation spot rather than fly. When you opt out of something, you choose not to participate. If your school offers an optional field trip, you can opt in (choose to go) or opt out (choose to stay).
Opting is different from being forced to do something or following a rule. It emphasizes that you have agency to make the decision yourself and carries the sense of actively selecting what you want rather than just accepting what you're given.
