ours
Shows that something belongs to us.
Ours is a possessive pronoun that means “belonging to us.” When you and your classmates work together on a group project, you might say “This project is ours” because it belongs to all of you collectively. When your family buys a new house, it becomes ours, belonging to the whole family together.
The word shows shared ownership or connection. If you're on a soccer team and someone asks whose ball you're using, you'd say “It's ours,” meaning it belongs to the whole team. A family dog is ours, a neighborhood park is ours, and ideas that a group develops together are ours.
Notice how ours works differently from “our.” You say “our house” when the noun comes right after, but “the house is ours” when it stands alone. You wouldn't say “the house is our.”
The word can also express pride or responsibility: “The victory is ours” or “The problem is ours to solve.” This usage shows that the group claims something or takes ownership of it, whether it's a success or a challenge.
