outfit
A set of clothes worn together as one matching look.
An outfit is a set of clothes worn together, chosen to look good as a combination. When you pick out jeans, a shirt, and sneakers that work well together, you've created an outfit. Your outfit for picture day might include your nicest pants and your favorite sweater, while your outfit for soccer practice is probably athletic clothes and cleats.
People often plan their outfits the night before an important event, thinking about what impression they want to make and whether everything matches. A Halloween outfit (or costume) might include a cape, mask, and special boots that all fit your character. Fashion designers create outfits for runway shows where every piece, from hat to shoes, works together as a complete look.
The word also refers to a group of people working together, especially in informal contexts. A construction outfit is a company and its crew working on a building project. A military unit might be called an outfit by its members. Cowboys in the Old West worked for cattle outfits that ran large ranches.
Finally, to outfit someone means to provide them with necessary equipment or clothing. A school might outfit its basketball team with new uniforms, or parents might outfit their kids with supplies for summer camp.
