outlet
A place where something can go out or escape.
Outlet has several related meanings:
- A place where something can exit or escape. A river finds its outlet to the sea, where all that flowing water finally empties into the ocean. In a building, air vents serve as outlets for stale air. The word suggests a path outward, a way for something contained to get out.
- A way to express feelings or use energy productively. Sports provide an outlet for physical energy and competitive drive. Drawing or writing can be an outlet for emotions that are hard to express in words. When you feel frustrated or excited, having a healthy outlet means you can channel those feelings into something constructive rather than letting them build up inside. A student who loves building things might find their creative outlet in a robotics club.
- A store that sells products, often at lower prices. A factory outlet sells goods directly from the manufacturer. An outlet mall contains many such stores clustered together.
- The electrical socket in a wall where you plug in devices. When you need to charge your tablet, you look for an available outlet. Electricians install outlets throughout homes and buildings to provide power where people need it.
