Overbearing means dominating or controlling others in an unpleasant, bossy way. An overbearing person constantly tells others what to do, rarely listens to different opinions, and acts like their way is the only right way.
Imagine a group project where one student insists on making every decision, dismisses her teammates' ideas without really listening, and criticizes how everyone else works. That's overbearing behavior. An overbearing coach might never let players try new strategies or make their own choices. An overbearing friend might always decide which games to play and get upset when others suggest something different.
The word carries a negative feeling. Someone who's overbearing is excessively controlling, making others feel stifled or frustrated. You might say someone has an overbearing personality or an overbearing manner.
Being a leader is different from being overbearing. Good leaders listen, consider other perspectives, and help their team succeed together. Overbearing people focus on their own authority and control, making situations tense and unpleasant. When someone describes a person as overbearing, they're pointing out that the person needs to step back and give others more space and respect.
