overseer
A person who watches and directs the work of others.
An overseer is someone whose job is to watch over and direct the work of others. A construction site might have an overseer who makes sure workers follow safety rules and complete tasks correctly. A factory overseer checks that machines run properly and workers meet production goals.
In American history, overseers played a cruel role on plantations before the Civil War, supervising enslaved people and enforcing brutal working conditions. This dark chapter shows how the same role that can mean helpful supervision in one context meant oppression and injustice in another.
Today, we more often use words like supervisor, manager, or foreman instead of overseer. When you do encounter overseer, it usually appears in historical contexts or in situations where someone monitors large operations: an overseer of elections ensures voting happens fairly, while an overseer of a restoration project makes sure an old building gets properly repaired. The word emphasizes the watching and directing aspect of leadership rather than inspiring or collaborating with others.
