oversize
Larger than the usual or expected size.
Oversize describes something larger than the standard or expected size. An oversize load on a highway might be a massive piece of construction equipment too wide for a normal lane, requiring special permits and warning signs. An oversize shirt hangs loosely on your body instead of fitting snugly.
The word can describe things that are intentionally made larger than usual. Some people prefer oversize sweatshirts because they're comfortable and cozy. Architects might design a room with oversize windows to flood the space with natural light. A bakery might sell oversize cookies that are twice as big as regular ones.
But oversize can also point to a problem: an oversize ego means someone thinks too highly of themselves, and an oversize backpack might be too heavy and awkward to carry comfortably. When shipping companies charge extra for oversize packages, they're responding to items that don't fit their normal handling systems.
As a verb, oversize means to make something larger than the standard size.
