owner
A person who has something and is responsible for it.
An owner is someone who possesses something, meaning it legally belongs to them. When you're the owner of a bicycle, you have the right to ride it, lend it to a friend, or decide to sell it. When someone owns a house, they can paint the walls purple if they want to, or plant a garden in the yard.
Ownership comes with both rights and responsibilities. A dog owner gets to enjoy their pet's companionship, but they're also responsible for feeding it, training it, and making sure it doesn't bother the neighbors. A business owner can make decisions about how the company runs, but they're also responsible when things go wrong.
The word can apply to almost anything that can be possessed: you might be the owner of a book, an idea, or even a mistake. When you say “I'm the owner of that error,” you're taking responsibility for something you did wrong.
People sometimes use owner to emphasize control or authority. In sports, when an athlete has completely dominated their opponent, commentators might say they owned the game. This is slang, but it captures how ownership implies power and control.
