painting
The art of putting paint on a surface to make pictures.
Painting is the art of applying color to a surface to create an image, design, or simply to cover something. When you dip a brush in paint and sweep it across paper or canvas, you're painting. The word describes both the action of making art and the finished work itself: Leonardo da Vinci's Mona Lisa is one of the world's most famous paintings.
People paint for countless reasons. Artists paint to express feelings, capture what they see, or imagine entirely new worlds. Your parents might spend a weekend painting the living room walls to freshen up your home. A sign maker paints letters onto storefronts. Throughout history, painters have documented everything from ancient Egyptian pharaohs to modern city streets, creating records of how people lived, dressed, and saw their world.
Painting styles vary wildly. Some artists paint realistic scenes that look almost like photographs. Others create abstract paintings, where shapes and colors matter more than representing actual objects. Painters work with different materials too: watercolors, oils, acrylics, or even spray paint. What connects all painting is that moment when color meets a surface and something new appears that wasn't there before.
