paleness
An unusual light skin color that shows sickness or strong feelings.
Paleness is when someone's skin loses its normal color and looks lighter or whiter than usual. You've probably noticed paleness when a friend feels sick or scared: their face might look almost ghostly compared to their usual healthy color.
Paleness happens because less blood flows near the surface of the skin. When you're frightened, your body sends blood away from your skin to your muscles (getting ready to run or fight), which makes you look pale. When you're sick with the flu, paleness can be a sign that your body is fighting an infection. Someone might also look pale from being cold, exhausted, or spending too much time indoors without sunlight.
The word describes an unusual lightness, a temporary change from someone's normal appearance, rather than naturally light skin tone. When a character in a story “turns pale,” it's a signal that something's wrong: they've just heard shocking news or witnessed something frightening. That sudden paleness reveals what they're feeling before they even speak.
