palm
The flat inner part of your hand below the fingers.
The palm of your hand is the broad, flat inner surface that faces forward when your arms hang at your sides. When you wave to someone, catch a ball, or give a high five, you're using your palm. Your palm connects your fingers to your wrist and contains strong muscles that let you grip things tightly or hold them gently.
Palm trees are tropical plants with tall, straight trunks topped by large, fan-shaped or feather-like leaves. These trees thrive in warm climates like Florida, California, and throughout the Caribbean and the Middle East. Coconut palms produce coconuts, while date palms produce dates. Palm trees became symbols of tropical paradise partly because they bend dramatically in strong winds but rarely break.
The verb palm means to hide an object in your hand, usually by gripping it in your palm. Magicians palm coins or cards to make them seem to disappear. If someone palms off a cheap item on you, they're tricking you into accepting something of lower quality than you expected.
