panicky
Feeling suddenly very scared and unable to think clearly.
Panicky describes the frantic, out-of-control feeling that comes with panic. When someone gets panicky, their heart races, their thoughts jumble together, and they struggle to think clearly or make good decisions.
Imagine a student who realizes five minutes before class that they forgot to study for a big test. That tight, breathless, “what do I do?” feeling is panicky. Or picture someone who loses sight of their parent in a crowded store: the surge of fear and confusion that makes them want to run in every direction at once is a panicky reaction.
The word captures how panic affects both mind and body. A panicky person might freeze up, rush around without a plan, or make impulsive choices they'd never normally make. Their voice might get high and shaky. Their hands might tremble.
Sometimes people describe situations as panicky too, like a panicky atmosphere in a classroom when everyone realizes the assignment is due tomorrow. The opposite of panicky is calm, collected, or composed.
