panorama
A wide, sweeping view of a large area.
A panorama is a wide, sweeping view of a large area, or a picture or photograph that captures such a view. When you stand at the top of a mountain and see valleys, forests, and distant peaks stretching in every direction, you're looking at a panorama. When you look out from a tall building and see the entire city spread before you, that's a panorama too.
The word comes from Greek roots meaning “all view,” which makes sense: a panorama shows you everything at once rather than focusing on one small part. Painters create panoramas on extra-wide canvases to capture battlefields, cityscapes, or natural wonders. Modern cameras have a panorama mode that stitches together multiple photos to create one long, sweeping image.
Panorama can also describe something that gives you a complete overview of a subject. A book that covers the entire panorama of World War II would trace the war from beginning to end, showing how events connected across different countries and battlefronts. A documentary might present a panoramic view of ocean life, from tiny plankton to massive whales.
The beauty of a panorama is how it lets you see the big picture, understanding how all the parts fit together into one grand scene.
