paragraph
A group of sentences about one main idea in writing.
A paragraph is a group of sentences that work together to express one main idea or topic. When you write, you use paragraphs to organize your thoughts, just like you might use different boxes to sort different types of toys or supplies.
Each paragraph usually starts with a topic sentence that tells readers what the paragraph will be about. The sentences that follow support or explain that main idea with details, examples, or evidence. When you're ready to discuss a new idea, you start a fresh paragraph. This structure helps readers follow your thinking without getting confused.
You can spot where one paragraph ends and another begins by looking for the indentation (a small space) at the start of a new line, or by a blank line between blocks of text. In a book, paragraphs help break up long stretches of text so pages don't look overwhelming. In essays, they show the logical steps in your argument.
Think of paragraphs like chapters in your thinking. A story about your weekend might have one paragraph about Saturday's soccer game and another about Sunday's family dinner. Each paragraph gives that topic the attention it deserves before moving on. Good writers know that strong paragraphs, each focused on one clear idea, make their writing much easier and more pleasant to read.
