part
A piece or portion of something larger.
The word part has several related meanings:
- A piece or portion of something larger. Your brain has different parts that handle different jobs, like remembering facts or controlling movement. A bicycle has many parts working together: wheels, pedals, chain, and handlebars. When you eat part of your sandwich and save the rest for later, you're dividing it into portions.
- A role in a play, movie, or story. An actor who lands the part of Hamlet gets to perform that character on stage. In your school play, you might try out for the part of the narrator or a main character. The word captures both the written role and the performance itself.
- To separate or move away from each other. When you part your hair, you divide it into sections with a comb. The Red Sea famously parted to let Moses and the Israelites pass through. When friends part ways after school, they head in different directions toward home.
The phrase “for my part” means “as far as I'm concerned” or “speaking for myself.” If your sister wants pizza and you say, “For my part, I'd rather have tacos,” you're clarifying your own preference while acknowledging that others might feel differently.
