participate
To take part in an activity with others.
To participate means to take part in an activity or event alongside others. When you participate in class discussions, you share your thoughts and listen to your classmates. When you participate in a soccer game, you're on the field playing, not sitting on the sidelines watching.
Participation means being actively involved and contributing something, whether it's your effort, ideas, or attention. You can attend a meeting without participating if you sit silently the whole time, but true participation requires engagement.
A participant is someone who participates. In a science fair, all the students who enter projects are participants. When researchers study how people learn, they call the volunteers in their study participants.
You'll often see participation valued in school and activities. Teachers might say “class participation counts toward your grade” because they want students engaged and thinking, not just quietly copying notes. Sports teams need every player to participate fully during practice. Group projects work best when all members participate rather than letting one person do all the work.
Active participation usually makes activities more meaningful and effective. When everyone participates in a family discussion about vacation plans, everyone feels heard and invested in the decision.
