parting
A meaningful goodbye or the act of separating from someone.
Parting means separating or saying goodbye, often with a sense of significance or finality. When friends give each other a parting hug at the end of summer camp, they're acknowledging that they won't see each other for a while. A parting gift is something you give someone as they leave, a way to remember the time you spent together.
The word carries more weight than a casual “see you later.” When a character in a story makes a parting speech, they're saying something meaningful because they know this goodbye matters. Shakespeare wrote about the “sweet sorrow” of parting, capturing how goodbyes can be both sad and beautiful at once.
Parting can also describe physical separation. When you part your hair, you create a line dividing it to one side or down the middle. When Moses parted the Red Sea in the biblical story, the waters split apart to create a path. A parting in the clouds might let sunlight stream through.
The phrase parting ways means two people or groups are separating to go in different directions, either literally (like travelers parting ways at a crossroads) or figuratively (like business partners who decide to part ways and pursue different ventures).
