patrolman
A police officer who regularly watches an area for safety.
A patrolman is a police officer whose job involves regularly walking or driving through an assigned area to keep it safe and orderly. The word comes from patrol, which means to move through an area watching for problems or dangers.
When you see a police officer driving slowly through your neighborhood or walking through a shopping district, that officer is patrolling. A patrolman watches for anything unusual: maybe someone needs help, maybe there's a traffic accident, or maybe something suspicious is happening. By being visible and present, patrolmen help prevent crimes before they start and respond quickly when something goes wrong.
Historically, patrolmen walked regular routes called beats through city neighborhoods, getting to know the people and businesses in their area. Today, most patrolmen drive patrol cars equipped with radios and computers, though some still walk beats in busy downtown areas or parks. The term patrolman is less common now. Many police departments use gender-neutral terms like patrol officer or simply officer instead, since people of all genders serve in this role.
