pattern
A design or arrangement that repeats in a regular way.
A pattern is something that repeats in a predictable way. When you see the same colors, shapes, or sounds appearing over and over in an organized way, you're seeing a pattern. A checkerboard has a pattern of alternating black and red squares. Wallpaper might have a floral pattern that repeats every few inches. Your weekly schedule follows a pattern if you have soccer practice every Tuesday and piano lessons every Thursday.
Patterns aren't just visual. Scientists look for patterns in nature: the way tree branches split, how snowflakes form, or when animals migrate. Mathematicians study numerical patterns like 2, 4, 6, 8, where each number increases by two. Detectives search for patterns in crimes to predict where a thief might strike next.
The word also describes a model or template used for making something. A sewing pattern shows you how to cut fabric to make a dress. A knitting pattern gives instructions for creating a specific design.
When you recognize patterns, you can make predictions. If it's rained every afternoon this week, you notice the pattern and bring an umbrella. Learning to spot patterns helps you understand how things work, solve problems faster, and see connections others might miss. Many of the greatest discoveries in science came from someone noticing a pattern that nobody else had seen before.
