payday
The day when you get paid for your work.
A payday is the specific day when workers receive their wages or salary for the work they've done. Most people get paid on a regular schedule: weekly, every two weeks, or monthly. A construction worker might get paid every Friday, while a teacher typically has payday once or twice a month.
For many families, payday is an important day because it's when they have money to pay bills, buy groceries, and handle other expenses. Before payday, money might be tight. After payday, there's relief and the ability to take care of necessities. This is why people sometimes say they're “waiting for payday” when they need to make a purchase but don't have enough money yet.
The word can also describe a big success or reward. When a prospector finally discovers gold after months of searching, that's their payday. A basketball player who trains hard for years and signs a professional contract hits the ultimate payday. In this sense, it means the moment when hard work finally pays off with a significant reward.
