payoff
The reward you get after working hard for something.
A payoff is the reward or benefit you receive after investing time, effort, or money into something. When you practice piano for months and finally play a difficult piece perfectly, that moment of accomplishment is the payoff for all those hours of practice. When scientists spend years researching a cure for a disease and finally make a breakthrough, that discovery is the payoff for their dedication.
The word often describes the moment when hard work or patience finally pays off. If you save your allowance for six months to buy something special, getting that item is the payoff. If you study hard for a test, a good grade is the payoff. In stories and movies, the payoff is the satisfying moment when everything comes together: the detective finally solves the mystery, the underdog team wins the championship, or the hero completes their quest.
Sometimes payoff describes a financial reward. A business owner expects a payoff (profit) from investing in their company. But payoff can also mean an emotional or personal reward that has nothing to do with money: the payoff of being kind might be a stronger friendship, or the payoff of learning a new skill might be the confidence that comes with it.
