peace
A time or feeling of calm without fighting or trouble.
Peace is the absence of fighting, conflict, or war. When countries are at peace, their armies aren't battling each other, and their citizens can live without fear of invasion or attack. When a family is at peace, members aren't arguing or hurting each other.
Peace also describes a feeling of calm and contentment inside yourself. You might feel at peace after finishing a difficult project, or find peace sitting quietly in nature. Some people meditate or pray to find inner peace when they feel anxious or upset.
The word can describe agreements too: a peace treaty formally ends a war between nations. After World War I, countries signed the Treaty of Versailles to make peace. History shows that keeping the peace can require as much effort as achieving it in the first place.
When someone says “peace and quiet,” they're asking for a calm environment without noise or interruptions. Parents might crave some peace and quiet after a hectic day. The phrase peace of mind means feeling secure and unworried, like knowing your bike is safely locked up gives you peace of mind that it won't be stolen.
