peach
A sweet, soft, fuzzy fruit with juicy yellow or orange flesh.
A peach is a sweet, fuzzy-skinned fruit that grows on trees in warm climates. When you bite into a ripe peach, the soft orange or yellow flesh tastes like sunshine, and juice might drip down your chin. Inside is a large, hard pit that you can't eat.
Peaches originally came from China thousands of years ago and now grow in many parts of the world, especially Georgia (called the Peach State) and California. They're delicious eaten fresh, but people also bake them into pies and cobblers, can them for winter, or dry them to make chewy snacks.
When someone calls another person “a peach,” they mean that person is especially kind, helpful, or wonderful. If your neighbor brings over fresh cookies when you're sick, you might say, “She's such a peach!” It's an old-fashioned compliment that suggests someone is as sweet and delightful as the fruit itself.
The color peach refers to that soft pinkish-orange shade, like the skin of a ripe peach. You might see peach-colored walls, clothing, or flowers.
