persona
The version of yourself you show to other people.
A persona is the version of yourself that you present to the world, especially the image you deliberately create for a specific purpose or audience. It's like the character an actor plays, except you're playing a version of yourself.
Think about how a teacher might have a classroom persona: firm, organized, and in control, even if at home she's relaxed and silly with her own kids. A comedian might develop a stage persona that's more exaggerated and confident than how they act with friends. When authors write under pen names and create mysterious personas, they're carefully shaping how readers see them.
Your persona isn't necessarily fake. It's more like choosing which parts of yourself to emphasize. You probably act differently around your grandparents than you do with your best friend, adjusting your persona to fit the situation. A politician might cultivate a persona of being trustworthy and down-to-earth, while a rock star might build a persona around being rebellious and wild.
Today, people often talk about someone's “online persona” or “public persona,” the carefully managed image they project on social media or in their career. Understanding that people have different personas helps you recognize that there's often more to someone than what you see on the surface.
