photography
The art of taking pictures using light and a camera.
Photography is the art and science of creating images by capturing light. The word comes from Greek roots meaning “writing with light,” which perfectly describes what happens: light reflects off a subject, passes through a camera lens, and creates a lasting image on film or a digital sensor.
When you take a photograph, you're freezing a moment in time that would otherwise disappear forever. A photographer might capture a hummingbird's wings mid-beat, a child's birthday smile, or storm clouds gathering over mountains. Each photograph preserves something that will never happen exactly that way again.
Photography requires both technical skill and creative vision. The technical side involves understanding how light, shutter speed, and focus work together. The creative side is about choosing what to photograph, from which angle, and at what moment. A great photographer sees interesting patterns, emotions, and stories that others might walk right past.
Since its invention in the 1800s, photography has transformed how we remember our lives, report news, create art, and understand distant places. Before photography, if you wanted to see what the Egyptian pyramids looked like, you'd need a painting or drawing. Now anyone can see detailed photographs of nearly anywhere on Earth. Photography has made the whole world visible to everyone, turning distant wonders into images you can study at your kitchen table.
