piccolo
A very small flute that plays very high notes.
A piccolo is a small, high-pitched musical instrument that looks like a miniature flute. While a regular flute is about two feet long, a piccolo is only about half that size, but it produces some of the highest notes in the orchestra.
Despite its tiny size, the piccolo has a piercing, bright sound that can cut through an entire orchestra or marching band. When you hear those sharp, whistling notes soaring above all the other instruments, that's often a piccolo. Its sound is so powerful that composers use it carefully: too much piccolo can overwhelm everything else.
Playing the piccolo requires the same fingering techniques as the flute, so many flute players can also play piccolo. But the piccolo demands extra precision because its small size makes even tiny mistakes in finger placement very noticeable. In a marching band, you'll often see piccolo players stepping high and playing bright, energetic melodies that make everyone want to march along.
