piggy bank
A small container, often pig-shaped, used to save money.
A piggy bank is a small container, traditionally shaped like a pig, used to save coins and sometimes paper money. You drop coins through a slot on top, and they collect inside until you're ready to open it and count what you've saved.
The classic piggy bank is made of ceramic and must be broken open to get the money out, which makes you think twice before smashing it just to buy a candy bar. Modern piggy banks often have a rubber stopper on the bottom so you can remove your savings without destroying the bank. Some are clear plastic so you can watch your money pile up, while others are opaque, turning your savings into a surprise.
People give piggy banks to children to teach the habit of saving up for something instead of spending money immediately. Breaking open a full piggy bank after months of saving allowance and birthday money can feel like opening a treasure chest.
