A piglet is a baby pig, usually less than a few months old. On farms, piglets are born in groups called litters, often with six to twelve siblings all at once. When they're first born, piglets weigh only about three pounds, but they grow quickly by drinking their mother's milk and eventually eating grain and vegetables.
Piglets are known for being playful and curious, running around and exploring their surroundings with enthusiasm. They have pink skin (though some breeds have darker coloring), small hooves, and curly tails. Despite the expression “eat like a pig,” piglets are actually quite clean animals, learn quickly, and can even be trained, much like dogs.
The most famous piglet in children's literature is probably Piglet from Winnie-the-Pooh, the small, timid friend of Pooh Bear who lives in the Hundred Acre Wood. Though he's often anxious, Piglet shows that even someone small can be brave when it matters.
