pimple
A small, raised bump on the skin filled with oil.
A pimple is a small, raised bump on the skin that forms when a pore gets clogged with oil, dead skin cells, and bacteria. Pimples often appear red or have a white center, and they can be tender or sore to the touch.
Pimples show up most often during the teenage years because of hormonal changes, but people of any age can get them. They typically appear on the face, forehead, nose, chin, chest, or back, places where skin has more oil glands. When a pore gets blocked, the trapped oil and bacteria cause inflammation, creating that familiar red bump.
Squeezing or picking at a pimple can spread bacteria to nearby pores and can leave scars. Many people use special creams or medications to treat stubborn pimples.
Multiple pimples together are called acne. While a single pimple might appear before a big event (seemingly at the worst possible time!), it usually goes away on its own within a few days. Everyone gets pimples sometimes: they're a normal part of how skin works, not something to feel embarrassed about.
