playdate
A planned time when kids meet to play together.
A playdate is a planned time when children get together at someone's house, a park, or another location to play and spend time together. Parents or caregivers typically arrange playdates in advance, choosing a day and time that works for both families.
Playdates give kids a chance to build friendships outside of school. Two classmates might have a playdate on Saturday afternoon to build with blocks, play board games, or run around in the backyard. Sometimes playdates happen between children who don't go to the same school, like neighbors or family friends.
In past generations, kids often played freely with whoever lived nearby, running from yard to yard without much planning. Today, with busier family schedules and different neighborhood dynamics, parents coordinate these get-togethers more deliberately.
Some kids love playdates and look forward to them all week. Others feel shy about going to someone else's house or having someone visit theirs. A successful playdate usually involves activities both children enjoy, like crafts, outdoor games, or pretend play. When a playdate goes well, both kids have fun, and they often want to plan another one soon.
