please
To make someone happy or to ask politely.
To please means to make someone happy or satisfied. When you help your teacher clean up the classroom without being asked, you please her. When your little brother shares his favorite toy with you, he's trying to please you by being generous.
The word appears in polite requests: “Please pass the salt” or “Could you please help me?” Adding please to a request shows respect and consideration for the other person. It transforms a command (“Give me that book”) into a courteous question (“May I please have that book?”).
When something is pleasing, it brings satisfaction or delight. A pleasing melody sounds beautiful. A pleasing design looks attractive. Pleasure is the feeling of happiness or enjoyment you get from something you like.
Sometimes people try too hard to please others, doing whatever anyone asks even when it conflicts with their own needs or values. A people-pleaser might agree to everything just to avoid disappointing anyone, which can lead to exhaustion or resentment. Finding balance matters: being considerate and kind while also respecting your own boundaries.
The phrase “if you please” means “if you don't mind” and can also add a note of emphasis or irony: “He walked right in and took my seat, if you please!”
