pointlessly
In a way that has no real purpose or good reason.
Pointlessly means doing something without any useful purpose or good reason. When you pointlessly argue about something that doesn't matter, you're wasting time and energy on a disagreement that won't change anything or help anyone. If you pointlessly wander around the house instead of starting your homework, you're moving without direction or purpose.
The word suggests waste and futility. Spinning pointlessly in an office chair might be fun for a moment, but it accomplishes nothing. Pointlessly worrying about a test that's already over uses up mental energy you could spend on something productive.
Sometimes people do things pointlessly out of habit or boredom, like pointlessly refreshing a webpage over and over or pointlessly clicking a pen during class. Other times, entire arguments become pointless when both sides realize they actually agree, or when the original question stops mattering.
The opposite would be doing something purposefully or meaningfully, with clear intention and goals.
