policy
A plan or set of rules for how things are done.
A policy is a plan or set of rules that guides how decisions are made and how things should be done. Schools have policies about tardiness, dress codes, and homework. A store might have a return policy explaining when you can bring back items you bought. Companies have policies about how employees should behave at work.
Policies exist to create consistency and fairness. Without a clear policy, one teacher might allow late homework while another doesn't, which would feel arbitrary and unfair. A good policy helps everyone know what to expect and ensures people in similar situations are treated similarly.
The word also applies to bigger decisions made by governments. When we talk about foreign policy, we mean the plan a country follows for dealing with other nations. Environmental policy refers to the rules and plans a government creates to protect nature and reduce pollution. Public policy describes any set of laws, rules, or principles that affect how society operates.
Creating a policy means thinking carefully about a problem, considering different solutions, and choosing the approach that will work best. When you help your family create a policy about screen time or chores, you're doing the same kind of planning that governments and organizations do, just on a smaller scale.
