A politician is someone who runs for and holds public office in government. Politicians work in positions like mayor, governor, senator, or president. They create laws, make decisions about how to spend public money, and try to solve problems affecting their communities, states, or countries.

Politicians spend much of their time debating ideas, negotiating compromises, and trying to convince others to support their proposals. A city council member might work on improving local parks or fixing roads. A senator might focus on national issues like education funding or environmental protection. Because they represent citizens, politicians often meet with voters to understand what matters to them.

The word sometimes carries a negative connotation. When someone calls another person a politician, they might mean that person is being slippery or saying whatever people want to hear rather than what they truly believe. You might hear someone say “stop being such a politician” when a friend won't give a straight answer to a question.

Most politicians genuinely want to serve their communities and make things better, though they often disagree about the best way to do it. Democracy requires politicians who can listen to different viewpoints, work with people they disagree with, and make tough decisions. The job combines public service with the challenge of bringing people together to solve real problems.
