pop
A sudden, sharp, popping sound or the act of making it.
Pop has several related meanings:
- A sudden, sharp sound like a balloon bursting or bubble wrap being squeezed. When you open a soda can, you hear the pop of escaping gas. Popcorn gets its name from the popping sound kernels make as they explode with heat.
- To make that sound or move suddenly. A bubble might pop when you touch it. Your ears might pop when you're on an airplane and the air pressure changes. A cork pops out of a bottle. A baseball player pops the ball high into the air, sending it up in what's called a pop fly.
- A shortened form of popular, especially in music and culture. Pop music is designed to appeal to many people, with catchy melodies and lyrics that are easy to remember. Pop songs often play on the radio and in stores. Pop culture means the movies, music, fashion, and trends that are widely known and enjoyed at a given time.
- An informal word for a carbonated soft drink in some parts of America. In Michigan or Minnesota, you might hear someone say “Can I have a pop?” when they want a soda. Other regions say soda or Coke for the same thing.
- An affectionate name some kids call their father or grandfather, similar to Dad or Papa.
