portray
To show or describe someone or something in a certain way.
To portray means to show or represent someone or something in a particular way, especially through art, writing, or acting. When an actor portrays Abraham Lincoln in a movie, they take on his character, trying to capture how he spoke, moved, and thought. When a novel portrays life in ancient Rome, the author describes what that world was like through vivid details and storytelling.
A newspaper article might portray a mayor as hardworking and honest, or it might portray the same mayor as careless and ineffective, depending on what the writer emphasizes. A book about wolves might portray them as dangerous predators or as misunderstood animals that rarely threaten humans.
Notice that portrayals involve choices about what to highlight and what to leave out. Two different movies about the same historical event might portray it very differently. When you write a story or give a presentation, you're making choices about how to portray your subject. The word reminds us that every representation, whether in art, media, or conversation, reflects someone's particular perspective.
