portrayal
The way a person or thing is shown or described.
A portrayal is the way someone or something is represented or shown, especially in art, writing, or performance. When an actor takes on the role of Abraham Lincoln in a movie, their portrayal includes how they speak, move, and bring the character to life. A biography's portrayal of a historical figure shapes how readers understand that person's life and character.
The word often appears when people discuss whether a representation is accurate, fair, or compelling. A documentary's portrayal of wolves might show them as dangerous predators or as misunderstood animals that avoid humans. A novel's portrayal of school life might ring true to your own experience or feel completely unrealistic.
Notice that portrayal implies choices. When a cartoonist draws a political figure, or when a historian writes about an event, they decide what to emphasize and what to leave out. These choices shape the final portrayal. You might hear someone say, “That movie's portrayal of medieval life wasn't historically accurate,” or “Her portrayal of the scientist in the play was so convincing that the audience forgot she was acting.”
The related verb is portray: “The book portrays the explorer as brave but reckless.”
