positively
In a sure or definitely certain way.
Positively means in a way that is definite, certain, or absolutely sure. When a detective says the fingerprints positively identify the suspect, there's no doubt or guesswork involved. When a doctor positively confirms a diagnosis after running tests, they're stating it as fact, not a possibility.
The word also means in an optimistic, confident, or constructive way. When a coach responds positively to a player's mistake by offering encouragement instead of criticism, they're focusing on what can be improved rather than what went wrong. Someone who thinks positively looks for good outcomes and possibilities instead of dwelling on problems. A teacher might say, “Try to approach this challenge positively,” meaning with an upbeat attitude and belief you can succeed.
Interestingly, positively can also be used for emphasis, meaning “absolutely” or “extremely.” Someone might say they were positively delighted by a surprise party or positively exhausted after a long hike. In this sense, it intensifies whatever feeling follows it.
The word connects to positive (helpful, optimistic, or certain) but adds the sense of doing something in that manner. When you respond positively to a friend's idea, you're supporting it. When scientists positively prove something, they've removed all doubt.
