potion
A special liquid mixture believed to have magic or healing powers.
A potion is a liquid mixture, usually containing herbs, chemicals, or other ingredients, that's meant to have a specific effect when someone drinks it. In fantasy stories and fairy tales, witches and wizards brew magical potions that might make someone fall asleep, turn invisible, or fall in love. In Snow White, the evil queen uses a potion to disguise herself as an old woman.
Potions also exist in real history. Throughout history, people called apothecaries mixed potions from plants and minerals to treat illnesses, long before modern medicine. Some of these old remedies actually worked (like willow bark tea for pain, which led to aspirin), while others were useless or even dangerous.
Today, we mostly use potion playfully or imaginatively. You might joke that your grandmother's special soup is a healing potion, or that your energy drink is a “study potion” before a big test. The word suggests something more mysterious and powerful than ordinary medicine or a regular beverage. When someone talks about brewing a potion, there's always a hint of magic or special purpose behind it, even if they're just mixing up a smoothie.
