potluck
A shared meal where each person brings a dish.
A potluck is a meal where everyone brings a different dish to share. Instead of one person cooking everything, each family or guest contributes something: one brings a salad, another brings pasta, someone else brings cookies. When everyone arrives, all the dishes get set out together on a table, and people serve themselves from the whole collection.
At a potluck, you never know exactly what you'll get, but that's part of the fun. You might discover your neighbor makes incredible lasagna or that your friend's grandmother has a secret recipe for the best brownies you've ever tasted.
Potlucks happen at church gatherings, office parties, school events, and neighborhood celebrations. They work well because they spread out the effort: no single person has to cook for thirty people. They also create variety: instead of one main course, you get to try many different foods.
When someone says potluck casually, they might mean taking a chance on whatever's available. If you show up at a friend's house at dinnertime and they say “stay for potluck,” they mean you're welcome to share whatever simple meal they already have.
